Golf Cart Range Calculator: How Far Will Your Lithium Battery Actually Go?

Every lithium golf cart battery listing says “up to 40 miles” or “up to 50 miles.” Those numbers assume a light cart on flat ground. This calculator gives you a realistic estimate for your cart enter the pack voltage and amp-hours, pick your cart type and terrain, and it works out usable energy and range the same way a pack engineer would.

How the Calculator Works

Range is energy divided by consumption. The calculator does three things:

  1. Converts amp-hours to energy. A "48V" lithium pack runs at 51.2V nominal, so a 100Ah pack holds 5.12 kWh. A 36V pack is 38.4V; a 72V pack is 76.8V.
  2. Applies usable depth. LiFePO4 packs can be safely discharged to about 90% of capacity, so 5.12 kWh becomes roughly 4.6 kWh you can actually use. (Lead-acid should stop at 50%, which is why a 100Ah lithium pack matches a much larger lead-acid set — the calculator shows the equivalent.)
  3. Estimates consumption per mile. A stock two-seater on flat pavement uses around 150–200 watt-hours per mile; a lifted six-seater climbing grass hills can use 400 or more. Cart type sets the base figure; terrain, driving style and temperature adjust it.

The consumption figures come from manufacturer range claims cross-checked against owner-reported mileage on forums; they're planning numbers, not test results. The ±15% band reflects how much two identical carts differ on the same day.

What the Numbers Tell You

  • 100Ah vs 105Ah: run both the difference is about one mile. Choose between them on BMS rating and warranty, not capacity. See 100Ah vs 105Ah vs 150Ah explained.
  • Lifted carts: switch the cart type from stock to lifted and watch the range drop by a third. That's why 150Ah is the usual recommendation for big tires.
  • Hills: hilly terrain costs about 20% — and it also means you want a 250A BMS, which the calculator can't tell you but the 48V comparison does.
  • Cold: lithium loses less range in cold than lead-acid, but it still loses some, and it can't be charged below freezing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my result so much lower than the "up to 50 miles" on the listing?

Listing figures assume a light cart, flat ground, low speed and a fresh pack. Set the calculator to a 2-seat stock cart, flat terrain and easy driving and you'll get close to the listing number — that's the best case, not the typical one.

Does a bigger battery make the cart faster?

No. Top speed is set by the motor and controller. A bigger pack holds voltage more steadily under load, so hills feel stronger, but the speed limit doesn't move.

How many rounds of golf can I get from a 48V 100Ah battery?

A round is typically 4–6 miles of cart travel. On a stock two-seater in normal conditions, a 100Ah pack covers three to four rounds; on a hilly course with a heavier cart, two.

Can I use this for a 72V cart?

Yes — select 72V. The energy math is the same; consumption per mile is similar to a 48V cart of the same size, so range scales with kWh.
