Every 48V lithium golf cart battery listing leads with an amp-hour number 100Ah, 105Ah, 150Ah, sometimes 160Ah and a range claim like “up to 50 miles.” The amp-hour number is real. The range claim is a best case measured on a flat course with a light cart. This guide explains what the number actually means, how to turn it into a realistic mileage estimate for your cart, and when paying for 150Ah is worth it and when it isn’t.

What Amp-Hours Actually Measure

Amp-hours (Ah) tell you how much current a battery can deliver for how long. A 100Ah pack can, in theory, supply 100 amps for one hour, or 20 amps for five hours. On its own it says nothing about range, because range depends on how many amps your cart pulls per mile — and that varies enormously between a stock two-seater on pavement and a lifted six-seater on hills.

The more useful number is energy, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). You get it by multiplying amp-hours by voltage. A “48V” lithium pack actually runs at 51.2V nominal, so:

That last row explains why a 100Ah lithium pack feels like a “like-for-like” replacement for a full set of lead-acid batteries even though it’s rated at fewer amp-hours. Lead-acid should only be discharged to about 50% to avoid killing it early; lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) can be run to 90% or more without damage. The usable energy ends up nearly identical — at a quarter of the weight.

How Many Watt-Hours Does a Golf Cart Use Per Mile?

This is the number nobody prints on the box, and it’s the one that decides your range. Based on figures manufacturers and owners report, a reasonable planning range is:

Estimates use 90% usable capacity. Your cart will differ; use these to compare pack sizes against each other, not as a guarantee.

Three things jump out of that table. First, 100Ah and 105Ah are the same battery for practical purposes — the 5% difference is less than the variation between two days of driving. Second, the jump to 150Ah is real: about 50% more range in every scenario. Third, if you own a heavy or lifted cart, no pack in this list gives you 40 miles; the “up to 50” claim simply doesn’t apply to you.

Which Size Should You Buy?

Choose 100Ah or 105Ah if…

  • You drive a stock or lightly modified 2–4 seat cart
  • A typical day is under 15 miles (a round of golf is 4–6 miles; most neighborhood use is less)
  • You can charge overnight every day
  • You want the lightest pack and the lowest price

Two Specs That Matter as Much as Amp-Hours

Continuous discharge current (BMS rating)

The battery management system limits how many amps the pack will deliver at once. Most golf cart packs are rated 200A continuous; some are 150A, a few are 250A. A stock cart controller draws roughly 250–300A at full throttle up a hill, and an upgraded controller can pull 400–500A. If the BMS limit is below what the cart asks for, the pack either cuts out (the cart lurches or stops) or the BMS runs hot. For a stock cart, 200A is fine. For a lifted cart or an upgraded controller, look for 250A or a “2C” rating, and read the peak-current spec too.

Cycle life and warranty

Most LiFePO4 golf cart packs quote 3,000–6,000 cycles to 80% capacity. At one charge per day that’s 8–16 years, so the number is less important than the warranty behind it: 5 years is now common, 10 years from a few brands. A bigger pack also helps here — a 150Ah pack doing 15 miles a day is cycling at maybe 40% depth, which is easier on the cells than a 100Ah pack doing the same miles at 60–70%.

Can You Add a Second Pack Later?

Often, yes. Most brands allow two identical packs in parallel, which doubles amp-hours and — because the load is shared — effectively doubles the available BMS current. The catches: both packs should be the same brand, model and age; you need tray space for a second box; and some brands require a communication cable between packs. If you’re on the fence between 100Ah and 150Ah, buying a 100Ah now and a second 100Ah in a year is a legitimate path, but check the brand’s parallel policy before you rely on it.
