Golf cart battery weight matters twice: once when you lift the batteries, and every day afterwards in how the cart accelerates, climbs, brakes and wears its tires. A set of six lead-acid batteries weighs as much as two adult passengers riding along permanently. The figures below come from manufacturer specification sheets rather than round numbers, so you can work out what your own cart carries and what a lithium swap would remove.

Short answer: A single flooded lead-acid golf cart battery weighs about 62 to 72 lb (6V), 63 to 69 lb (8V) or 85 lb (12V), using Trojan’s T-105, T-875 and T-1275 as the reference. That makes a 36V pack of six 6V batteries about 372 lb, a 48V pack of six 8V batteries about 378 lb, and a 48V pack of four 12V batteries about 340 lb. A 48V lithium pack weighs 82 lb (LiTime 100Ah), 102.5 lb (Vatrer 105Ah) or 139 lb (Vatrer 150Ah), so a conversion removes roughly 240 to 300 lb, about 10 to 12% of a loaded cart’s total weight.
Horizontal bar chart of golf cart battery pack weights: 36V lead-acid six T-105 372 lb, 48V lead-acid six T-875 378 lb, 48V lead-acid four T-1275 340 lb, 48V lithium 100Ah LiTime 82 lb, 48V lithium 105Ah Vatrer 102.5 lb, 48V lithium 150Ah Vatrer 138.8 lb

Trojan flooded models are the common reference; other brands’ batteries of the same group size weigh within a few pounds. Add about 10 to 15 lb for cables, hold-downs and the acid film that collects on a used set.

Notice that the heavier battery in each voltage is also the higher-capacity one: the T-145 carries more lead and more acid than the T-105, which is where its extra amp-hours come from. In lead-acid, weight and range rise together. Also notice that four 12V batteries weigh less than six 8V batteries but usually give less capacity; the six-battery 48V layout is heavier because it carries more lead.

Weights from LiTime and Vatrer product pages. Lithium packs with steel cases weigh more than plastic-cased packs of the same capacity; the case adds protection, not range. Check the exact listing (size chart).

Unlike lead-acid, a lithium pack’s weight says little about its range: the 82 lb LiTime 100Ah and the 102.5 lb Vatrer 105Ah hold nearly the same energy. The difference is the case and the BMS hardware. If you are choosing between two lithium packs, compare amp-hours and continuous current, not pounds.

What Does Removing 250 lb From a Golf Cart Actually Change?

A typical two-seat 48V cart weighs about 900 to 1,000 lb with lead-acid batteries. Add two riders and a bag and it is near 1,400 lb. Taking 276 lb out (six T-875 to a Vatrer 105Ah) cuts the loaded weight by about 20%, and that shows up in four places:

  • Acceleration and hills. The motor has a fifth less mass to move, which is why converted carts feel quicker off the line even though the governed top speed does not change (does lithium make a cart faster).
  • Range. Less weight means less energy per mile. The weight saving alone is worth a few percent of range; the larger gain comes from lithium’s usable capacity and flat voltage (range calculator).
  • Brakes, tires and suspension. Lighter carts stop shorter and wear tires and leaf springs more slowly. Owners of carts that sat low on the rear springs with lead-acid often notice the ride height come back up.
  • Handling. Lead-acid weight sits low in the frame and adds to rear traction on wet grass. A lighter cart is easier to steer but can spin the rear wheels more readily on slick slopes, which is a reason to keep speed down on wet hills after a conversion.

When Less Weight Causes a Problem

  • The pack slides in the tray. Six lead-acid batteries fill the tray wall to wall; one lithium pack does not. It needs a proper hold-down, and on rough ground the lighter pack takes more of a beating without one (hold-down bracket).
  • Rear-heavy carts get light at the back. On a cart with a rear seat kit, most of the pack weight came from under the front seat; removing it shifts the balance rearward. It is rarely a safety issue, but it is why some converted six-seaters feel different on hills.
  • Lifting is still a two-person job. An 82 to 139 lb lithium pack is far easier than six 63 lb batteries, but it is a single awkward box; use the pack’s handles or a lifting strap and never let it tip onto its terminals.

Working Out Your Own Cart’s Battery Weight

  1. Count the batteries and read the model number on the label (for example T-875, GC2, 8VGC).
  2. Look up that model’s weight on the maker’s spec sheet; if the label is gone, use the table above for the group size.
  3. Multiply by the count and add about 10 lb for cables and hold-downs.
  4. Subtract the weight on the lithium pack’s listing to see what the conversion removes, and use that figure when deciding whether the cart’s springs or hold-down need attention.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 48V golf cart battery pack weigh?

About 340 lb for four 12V lead-acid batteries, about 378 lb for six 8V, and 82 to 139 lb for a single 48V lithium pack, depending on capacity and case.

How much does one golf cart battery weigh?

A 6V flooded battery weighs about 62 to 72 lb, an 8V about 63 to 69 lb, and a 12V about 85 lb, by Trojan’s specifications. Plan on two people or a lifting strap.

Does a lighter battery make a golf cart go farther?

A little. Most of a lithium cart’s extra range comes from usable capacity and steady voltage, not the weight saving, but the weight does help on hills and in acceleration.

Is a heavier lithium pack better?

Not by itself. A steel case adds weight and protection, not energy. Compare amp-hours and the BMS continuous current rating instead.
