Club Car DS and Precedent carts convert to lithium as easily as any EZGO with one exception that catches almost everyone the first time. Most 48V Club Cars built from 1995 to about 2013 have an On-Board Computer (OBC) that sits between the charger and the batteries. It was designed to manage lead-acid charging, and with a lithium pack it will usually stop the charger from running at all. This guide covers which battery fits your DS or Precedent, which charger plug you need, and exactly how to handle the OBC so your new pack actually charges.
Step 1: Which Club Car Do You Have?

The serial number plate is under the passenger-side dash (Precedent) or on the frame near the passenger’s feet (DS). The first letters tell you the model and the digits after them the year. Count the batteries to confirm voltage: six 6V is 36V; six 8V or four 12V is 48V.
How to tell if your cart has an OBC: look under the seat near the batteries for a small black box, roughly 3″ × 4″, with a bundle of thin wires one of them gray running to the battery pack and to the charger receptacle. If it’s there, plan on bypassing it. If the cart charges with a “green light on the charger receptacle” style ERIC system (2014+ Precedent), there is no OBC to worry about.
Step 2: What You Need to Buy
- One 48V lithium pack, 100–150Ah, for any 1995+ DS or any Precedent. The Club Car tray takes a standard ~20″ × 12.5″ × 9.5″ pack with room to spare. - A 48V lithium charger with the correct Club Car plug. Photograph your receptacle: the older crowfoot plug has three flat blades in a triangle; the newer round 3-pin is a round connector with three pins. - A 48V-to-12V reducer if the cart has lights, horn, stereo or a fan. 48V-to-12V reducers.
- Hold-down hardware bracket or ratchet strap. The lithium pack is a quarter of the weight of six 8V batteries and must not shift.
- A lithium battery meter the factory Club Car gauge reads lead-acid voltage and will be wrong with lithium. Lithium-calibrated meters.
Step 3: The OBC Bypass Why and How
What the OBC does
The On-Board Computer counts amp-hours out of the lead-acid pack and, when you plug in, tells the factory charger how long to run. The charger’s negative lead doesn’t go straight to the battery; it passes through the OBC, which acts as a switch. With a lithium pack the OBC sees a voltage curve it doesn’t understand and typically holds that switch open so the charger never starts, or starts and stops within seconds. It can also keep “counting” a pack that no longer exists and eventually refuse to let the cart run until it sees a charge cycle it recognizes.
The bypass
The goal is simple: route the charger receptacle’s negative wire directly to the lithium pack’s negative terminal, so the OBC is no longer in the charging circuit.
- With the Run/Tow switch in TOW and the old batteries already out, find the charger receptacle’s negative (black) wire. Follow it it goes to the OBC, not to a battery.
- Disconnect that wire from the OBC and extend it (10 AWG minimum, with a ring terminal) to the lithium pack’s negative terminal. Some owners instead move the OBC’s own output wire; either way, the receptacle negative must end at the pack negative with no OBC in between.
- Find the OBC’s gray wire (the sense lead). Disconnect it and tape it off. Leave the OBC physically in place removing it can disturb other harness connections.
- If the OBC’s main negative lead ran to a battery terminal, move that to the pack negative as well, or leave the OBC unpowered entirely both work; unpowered is simpler.
Most lithium kits sold “for Club Car” include a bypass diagram in the box. If yours doesn’t, the charger negative to pack negative rule above is the whole job. Many owners report the bypass takes longer to understand than to do it’s 15 minutes with a crimper.
One caution: once the OBC is bypassed, the cart will no longer refuse to run when the pack is low. That protection now comes from the lithium pack’s BMS, which cuts output at its low-voltage limit. That’s normal and expected just don’t run the pack to zero and leave it there.
Step 4: The Conversion, Step by Step
Time: 1.5–2.5 hours including the bypass. Tools: 1/2″ and 9/16″ wrenches, wire brush, crimper and a length of 10 AWG wire with ring terminals, a helper for lifting.
- Run/Tow switch to TOW. Key off, key out. (On a DS the switch is under the seat near the controller; on a Precedent it’s under the seat on the driver’s side.)
- Photograph the wiring, especially the OBC harness and where the charger receptacle wires go.
- Disconnect main negative first, then main positive. Tape the ends.
- Remove the series jumpers and lift out the six batteries. Each is 60–70 lb.
- Clean and dry the tray. Neutralize acid with baking soda solution; wire-brush any rust.
- Do the OBC bypass now (Step 3 above) while the bay is empty and the wiring is easy to reach.
- Set and secure the lithium pack with terminals toward the main leads. Strap or bracket it before connecting anything.
- Connect main positive, then main negative, torqued to the pack manufacturer’s spec.
- Connect the charger receptacle negative (now bypassed) to the pack negative, and confirm the receptacle positive goes to the pack positive as it did before.
- Wire the reducer if fitted: fused input across the pack terminals, output to the accessory circuit.
- Run/Tow to RUN, key on. The cart should wake. Test drive slowly, then plug in the charger and confirm it starts and stays running.
Club Car-Specific Notes
MCOR and the IQ/Excel controllers
The Precedent’s MCOR throttle and IQ (or Excel) controller are unaffected by the battery chemistry they see 48V and don’t care what’s producing it. Regenerative braking on IQ/Excel carts pushes current back into the pack on downhills; every golf-cart lithium BMS accepts this. A pack charged to 100% at the top of a long hill may briefly hit its charge limit and lose regen for a second; set the charger to 90% if you live on a slope.
Onward and Tempo with factory lithium
Carts that shipped with Club Car’s own lithium pack use a communicating BMS that drives the dash display. An aftermarket 48V pack runs the cart normally but the display may go blank or show a fixed value. An external meter solves that. There is no OBC on these carts.
The crowfoot plug
Older DS carts use the three-blade crowfoot receptacle, which fewer lithium chargers ship with. Rather than replacing the receptacle, buy a crowfoot-to-round-3-pin adapter or a charger specifically listed with a crowfoot plug. Keep the original receptacle intact for resale.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to bypass the OBC to run lithium in a Club Car?
On any 1995–2013 48V DS or Precedent with an OBC, yes otherwise the charger usually won’t run. Carts from 2014 onward with the ERIC charging system, and all Onward/Tempo models, don’t have an OBC.
Will a lithium battery fit a Club Car Precedent?
Yes. The Precedent tray is one of the roomiest in the industry and accepts any standard 48V drop-in pack, including 150Ah sizes.
Can I keep my Club Car PowerDrive charger?
Generally no. The PowerDrive charger relies on the OBC to control charging and uses a lead-acid profile. Once the OBC is bypassed it won’t function correctly. A lithium charger with your plug type replaces it.
