A lithium golf cart battery that won’t charge is almost never a dead battery. In the large majority of cases it’s one of nine things, and the first three take under five minutes to check. This guide walks through them in order from most common and easiest to least common and most serious, with what to look for at each step. Work down the list; don’t skip ahead to “the BMS is broken” it’s the last cause for a reason.
Before You Start: What “Won’t Charge” Looks Like
Different symptoms point to different causes, so note exactly what happens when you plug in:

Cause 1: The BMS Is Asleep or in Low-Voltage Cutoff
How common: the single most common cause, especially on a brand-new pack or one that sat for months.
Every lithium golf cart pack has a battery management system that disconnects the output when cells get too low, and many ship in a “storage” or “sleep” state that keeps the terminals dead until the pack is woken. From the outside, a sleeping pack reads 0V the charger sees no battery and refuses to start. On a cart, this also looks like a completely dead vehicle.
Fix: wake the BMS. Depending on the pack: press the power/wake button on the pack (often a small recessed button near the terminals); connect the charger, wait 30 seconds, disconnect, reconnect; or open the Bluetooth app and look for an “activate” or “wake” control. Some packs need the charger to push a small current for a minute before the BMS re-engages leave it connected for five minutes before deciding it’s not working. If the pack hit low-voltage cutoff because it was run flat and left, the same wake procedure applies, but plan to charge it fully before using the cart again.
Cause 2: The Charger Plug Doesn’t Actually Match
How common: very, on new conversions.
Several golf cart charger plugs look nearly identical and are keyed differently the EZGO TXT48 and RXV three-pin plugs are the classic pair. A plug that seats but isn’t the right one may not make contact on all pins, or may connect to the wrong pins. Kits also sometimes ship with a charger for a different cart than you ordered.

Cause 3: You’re Using a Lead-Acid Charger
How common: very, when the old charger was kept.
A lead-acid charger reads the pack’s higher resting voltage as “already full” and refuses to start, or starts and then pushes toward an equalization voltage the BMS won’t accept so the BMS disconnects, the charger loses the battery, resets, tries again. The result is a charger that cycles on and off, or runs and never finishes.

Cause 4: Club Car On-Board Computer Still in the Circuit
How common: the number-one cause on 1995–2013 Club Car DS and Precedent carts.
Club Car’s OBC controls the charger’s negative connection and expects lead-acid behaviour. With a lithium pack it usually holds the charge circuit open. Symptom: the charger clicks on, runs for a few seconds, and stops or never engages at all.
Fix: bypass the OBC so the charger receptacle’s negative wire goes directly to the pack negative, and disconnect the OBC’s gray sense wire. Full wiring in the Club Car conversion guide. If an earlier failed charge attempt put the OBC into lockout, disconnect the pack’s main negative for five minutes to reset it, then complete the bypass.
Cause 5: Too Cold to Charge
How common: seasonal the leading cause from November to March in northern states.
Charging LiFePO4 cells below about 32°F / 0°C causes permanent damage, so the BMS blocks charging when the cells are cold. The cart may still drive (discharge is allowed to well below freezing), which confuses people “it runs, so why won’t it charge?” Some chargers display a temperature error; many just sit idle.
Fix: bring the pack above freezing before charging move the cart into a heated space for a few hours, or drive it for ten minutes (discharge warms the cells slightly). For carts that live outdoors in cold climates, a self-heating pack or a battery warmer solves it permanently.
Cause 6: Charger Voltage Doesn’t Match the Pack
How common: occasional, usually on carts that have been converted between voltages.
A 48V lithium pack needs a charger that reaches 58.4V (a few packs specify 57.6V). A 36V pack needs 43.8V. A charger for a different voltage, or a “48V” charger that only reaches 54–56V, will either refuse to start (pack voltage already above its target), or run indefinitely and never show 100%.
Fix: check the charger’s label or manual for its output voltage and compare it to the pack’s datasheet. If you have a multimeter, measure the charger’s output with it running: it should climb to the pack’s full-charge voltage. A charger that tops out short of that is the wrong charger.
Cause 7: Loose Connection, Corroded Terminal or Blown Fuse
How common: moderate, and more likely a few months after a conversion than on day one.
Three places to check. The pack terminals: were the main leads torqued to spec, and are they still tight? A lithium pack is lighter and vibrates differently than six lead-acid batteries; a cable that was snug can loosen. The charger receptacle: on many carts there’s an inline fuse in the receptacle’s wiring often forgotten, sometimes blown by the first failed charge attempt. The charger cable itself: strain at the plug end is a common failure point.
Fix: Run/Tow to TOW, then check and re-torque the pack terminals, inspect the receptacle wiring for a fuse and test it, and flex the charger cable near the plug while it’s connected to see if the charger’s light flickers.
Cause 8: The Charger Has Failed
How common: uncommon, but it happens cheap bundled chargers fail more than the packs they come with.
Test: with the charger plugged into the wall but not into the cart, measure DC voltage across the plug’s output pins with a multimeter. Many lithium chargers show no output until they detect a battery, so a zero reading isn’t conclusive but a charger that shows nothing at the wall socket end (no light, no fan, no relay click) and nothing at the pins is likely dead. If you can borrow a known-good charger with the same plug and voltage, that’s the definitive test.

Cause 9: BMS Fault or Cell Imbalance
How common: rare. This is the only cause on the list that means the pack itself has a problem.
If one cell group in the pack is significantly higher than the others, the BMS will stop charging when that group hits its ceiling even though the pack as a whole reads 80%. Symptom: the charger runs, the pack tops out at the same partial percentage every time, and the app (if the pack has one) shows one cell group well above the rest. A BMS with a failed component can also refuse to enable charging regardless of what you do.
Fix: first, leave the charger connected for 12–24 hours many BMS units balance cells slowly only when the pack is near full, and a pack that’s been unbalanced by months of partial charging may need a long session to recover. Check the app for per-cell voltages before and after. If the imbalance doesn’t close, or the BMS reports a fault code, this is a warranty claim. Don’t open the pack; every manufacturer voids the warranty for that, and the cell groups inside can deliver enough current to weld a wrench.

Can I jump-start a lithium golf cart battery with a car battery?
