More lithium conversions go wrong at the charger than at the battery. The pack drops in fine, the cart drives beautifully, and then the old charger either refuses to start, stops after two minutes, or worst case pushes the pack past its limits until the BMS shuts everything down. This guide covers the three things that decide whether a charger works with your lithium pack: the charge profile, the output voltage, and the plug on the end of the cable.
Why Your Lead-Acid Charger Usually Won’t Work
A lead-acid golf cart charger is built around lead-acid chemistry. It expects the pack voltage to sag and recover in a particular way, it pushes the pack up to an equalization voltage that’s higher than lithium tolerates, and it decides “full” based on how the current tapers. Three things go wrong with a lithium pack:
- It may not start at all. Many lead-acid chargers check the pack voltage before switching on. A lithium pack sits at a higher resting voltage than lead-acid, and some chargers read that as “already full” or “no battery connected.”
- It may overshoot. A 48V lead-acid charger can push 60V or more during its finishing stage. A 48V LiFePO4 pack should stop at 58.4V. The BMS will protect the cells by disconnecting but that leaves you with a charger that keeps cycling on and off and a pack that never quite fills.
- It may never finish. Lithium’s current taper looks different, so the charger’s “done” logic can time out or run indefinitely.
Some newer “smart” chargers Lester Summit II, some Delta-Q models have a selectable lithium profile. If your charger is one of those, check its manual for a LiFePO4 algorithm and the voltage it targets. If the manual doesn’t say “lithium” or “LiFePO4” anywhere, assume it won’t work.

Every charger sold as “lithium” or “LiFePO4” for golf carts will meet the first two rows. Can I use my old golf cart charger with a lithium battery?
Only if it has a selectable LiFePO4 profile check the manual. Standard lead-acid chargers either won’t start, won’t finish, or push the pack past its voltage limit. Most conversions need a new charger, and most kits include one.
